Overview & Journey Experience

Deep inside the Peruvian Amazon, life beats at an elemental frequency found nowhere else on earth. The emerald canopy stretches endlessly toward the horizon, filled with the primal calls of howler monkeys and the flash of scarlet macaws in flight. For travelers seeking raw untamed wilderness, our tailored jungle expeditions stand apart from conventional river operators by taking you far beyond standard tourist channels into wild animal corridors.

At Machu Picchu Premium, we design each expedition around small private footprints, expert native naturalists from local river communities, and custom departure timings that avoid noisy tour flotillas. Space across our secluded eco-lodges remains strictly limited to safeguard local biodiversity, making advance reservation vital for high-season dates.

Tour Highlights

  • Primary rainforest depth led by native naturalists who trace wildlife tracks, medicinal flora, and canopy bird calls with razor-sharp precision.
  • Dawn boat excursions along quiet oxbow lakes to witness giant river otters, black caimans, and hoatzin bird colonies before midday heat sets in.
  • Secluded clay lick viewpoints where hundreds of parrots and macaws gather in a dazzling display of color and sound.
  • Nutritious, chef-crafted jungle cuisine utilizing fresh river fish, native fruits, and organic local ingredients.
  • Low-impact eco-lodges offering clean private bungalows, en-suite bathrooms, and serene verandas surrounded by rainforest sounds.
  • Machu Picchu Premium advantage: intimate group sizes, flexible pacing, and zero mass-tourism compromises.

Day Highlight: Guided rainforest trail walk and river navigation toward Lodge Bambu with native naturalist commentary.

On the first day of our Manu jungle adventure, we will pick you up around 6:00 a.m. from your hotels in Cusco, using the private transportation of Bioandean Expeditions. The first part of our excursion will take us through the majestic Andean mountains. We will witness the village of Huancarani, which contains the funeral towers of Ninamarca, a cemetery of the pre-Inca culture of Lupacas, which we will witness briefly on our way to Paucartambo, known as the folkloric and colonial town. At midday we will arrive at the entrance of Manu National Park and access one of the most protected wild areas in South America.

We will continue in our private transport along a dusty road and through the thick fog from which this section of the forest takes its name of Cloud Forest. Eventually we will arrive at the home of the exotic Peruvian national bird, the “Cock of the Rocks”, where it is known to gather with others of its kind for some sort of social gathering that seems reminiscent of a grand courtship. You will witness that this is an incredible spectacle with an impressive variety of sounds and colors that can only be found in the jungle. For our first night, we will stay at Bamboo Lodge.

With luck, we will make some sightings of some jungle mammals, such as monkeys or the famous capybaras (jungle rodents that measure up to 2.5 feet long). Towards the end of the afternoon, we will arrive at our next sleeping destination, Dorado Lodge, arriving at approximately 3:00 pm Here, showers and toilets will be available. We may encounter an Agami heron or a Sungrebe and brown capuchin monkeys usually feeding on nearby fruits. Specially constructed docks leading into the lake allow us to look for a family of giant otters that live here these largest freshwater carnivores in the world, remain common only in Manu as they have been hunted to extinction in most of their former range.

Each animal consumes 4 to 5 kilos of fish per day and can often be seen eating large fish on logs at the edge of the lake. The rest of the day will be spent walking the trails in the area in search of some of the 13 species of monkeys found in the forest here. Your guide will explain some of the basics of rainforest ecosystems and point out some of the medicinal plants in the area used by local indigenous groups. A witness is planned to Cocha Otorongo Lake, where observation piers and a 20-meter observation tower in the rainforest canopy overlooking the lake are available for wildlife viewing. We will also look for a large family of giant otters that inhabit this lake.

  • Toiletries: Personal packing item recommended for your daily comfort on the route.
  • Personal medications: Personal packing item recommended for your daily comfort on the route.
  • Camera: With spare charged batteries, since sub-freezing night temperatures drain battery cells rapidly.
  • Flashlight with spare batteries: Hands-free LED headlamp with fresh replacement batteries for navigating campsites before dawn.
  • Water purification tablets (Micropur recommended): Reusable wide-mouth canteen (Nalgene or Camelbak) plus purification tablets for day excursions.
  • Toilet paper: Personal packing item recommended for your daily comfort on the route.
  • Sandals, swimming suit and towels: Personal packing item recommended for your daily comfort on the route.

  • Altitude Acclimatization: Plan to spend at least 48 to 72 hours in Cusco (3,400 m / 11,150 ft) prior to departure. Walk at a gentle pace, sip warm coca tea, and drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water daily to help your body adapt.
  • Dietary Pacing on Day One: High elevation slows stomach digestion. Opt for light, easily digestible carbohydrates like quinoa soups, vegetables, and rice during your first two days in the highlands, avoiding heavy meats and alcohol.
  • Layering Technique: Andean weather fluctuates wildly. Early mornings bring frosty temperatures below freezing, while intense equatorial sun warms midday trails to 22°C. Dress in three distinct layers: moisture-wicking synthetic base, thermal fleece mid-layer, and waterproof outer jacket.
  • Footwear Preparation: Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots that have already been broken in on trails at home. Pack high-density merino wool hiking socks to reduce friction and guard against blisters.
  • Cash in Small Soles: Mountain villages, roadside fruit stalls, hot spring baths, and artisanal weavers do not accept credit cards or large 100-soles banknotes. Carry 200 to 300 Peruvian Soles in small denominations (10, 20, and coins).
  • Leave No Trace Ethic: Help preserve the beauty of Peru. Carry all personal trash and disposable wet wipes back to camp for proper eco-disposal, and never touch or remove stone masonry from archaeological complexes.
  • Luggage Storage in Cusco: You only need your daypack and the supplied trek duffel bag on the trail. Leave your hard-shell suitcases and city clothes safely stored in our complimentary, locked luggage room at our Cusco office.
Yellow fever vaccination is highly recommended for travel to the tropical lowlands of Peru (Puerto Maldonado, Manu, Iquitos) and should ideally be administered at least 10 days before departure. Malaria risk is low in tourist reserve zones, but preventative anti-malarial medication may be considered after consulting your travel doctor. Always pack high-DEET or picaridin insect repellent, long-sleeved lightweight cotton shirts, and light-colored trekking pants to prevent bites.
Our lodges provide heavy-duty rubber boots in all standard sizes for muddy forest walks, so you do not need to pack your own. Bring several pairs of tall, moisture-wicking synthetic or merino socks, a breathable waterproof poncho, a reliable headlamp with extra batteries for night safaris, and a dry-bag or waterproof cover for your camera and phone. Binoculars (8×42 or 10×42) will dramatically elevate your bird and monkey sightings.
Depending on your specific itinerary, common sightings include multiple monkey species (howler, squirrel, capuchin, tamarin monkeys), giant river otters, caimans, capybaras, sloth, colorful macaws and toucans at clay licks, and extraordinary poison dart frogs. Elusive predators like jaguars and tapirs roam the deep reserve forests; while sightings can never be guaranteed, early dawn and late twilight excursions maximize your chances.
Eco-lodges operate on eco-conscious generator or solar systems. Electricity is typically provided in communal lounge areas for charging cameras and phones during designated morning and evening hours. Cellular reception and Wi-Fi are generally absent or very limited, providing an idyllic opportunity to disconnect, unplug, and immerse yourself in pristine wilderness.
