  • Dietary Pacing on Day One: High elevation slows stomach digestion. Opt for light, easily digestible carbohydrates like quinoa soups, vegetables, and rice during your first two days in the highlands, avoiding heavy meats and alcohol.

  • Layering Technique: Andean weather fluctuates wildly. Early mornings bring frosty temperatures below freezing, while intense equatorial sun warms midday trails to 22°C. Dress in three distinct layers: moisture-wicking synthetic base, thermal fleece mid-layer, and waterproof outer jacket.

  • Footwear Preparation: Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots that have already been broken in on trails at home. Pack high-density merino wool hiking socks to reduce friction and guard against blisters.

  • Cash in Small Soles: Mountain villages, roadside fruit stalls, hot spring baths, and artisanal weavers do not accept credit cards or large 100-soles banknotes. Carry 200 to 300 Peruvian Soles in small denominations (10, 20, and coins).

  • Leave No Trace Ethic: Help preserve the beauty of Peru. Carry all personal trash and disposable wet wipes back to camp for proper eco-disposal, and never touch or remove stone masonry from archaeological complexes.

  • Luggage Storage in Cusco: You only need your daypack and the supplied trek duffel bag on the trail. Leave your hard-shell suitcases and city clothes safely stored in our complimentary, locked luggage room at our Cusco office.

The Salkantay Trek is physically more demanding and reaches a higher altitude (4,630 m / 15,190 ft compared to 4,215 m on the Inca Trail). However, it does not involve the thousands of steep stone steps characteristic of the Inca Trail, making it significantly friendlier on knees and joints. The trek passes through dramatically diverse ecosystems, transitioning from glaciated alpine passes down into subtropical cloud forests rich with orchid blooms and organic coffee plantations.

Not at all! We provide you with a durable duffel bag at your pre-trek briefing in Cusco. You can pack up to 7 kg (15 lbs) of clothing and personal belongings into this duffel, which is carried by our pack mules and support horses between camps. You only carry a light daypack with your water bottle, rain jacket, camera, sunblock, and essential personal items.

Our premium domes feature private twin or queen beds equipped with orthopedic mattresses, warm thermal down comforters, and cozy hot water bottles. Upgraded dome sites feature private en-suite hot showers and flush toilets. You get to fall asleep staring at the Andean night sky through clear panoramic ceiling panels without enduring the cold of a standard ground tent.

Yes, with pleasure! Our mountain chefs are professionally trained culinary artists who take immense pride in catering to vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and specific allergy requirements. Meals are prepared fresh daily using organic produce, quinoa, fresh trout, chicken, vegetables, and homemade soups. Please notify us of your preferences during booking.
